Hoaruseb Lion Pride’s Tragic End
The Hoaruseb pride, along with two black-backed jackals, was poisoned on Saturday, 09 July. This was a tragic end to the beautiful pride that attracted and enchanted tourists from various parts of the world.
Conservation Woes
Speculations are that the lions were poisoned with strychnine, but further test results will give more insight on what actually occurred.
Morada, Tawny and Maya were the three lions that were poisoned, along with the two jackals. Their carcasses were burnt, in order to prevent other animals being poisoned. Maya, born in February 2007, was Tawny’s cub.
In April 2010, one of the male lions of the Hoaruseb pride, Leonardo, was shot during a trophy hunt.
Background
The Hoaruseb pride of the Kunene Region was well known to tourists and conservationists alike. They were being studied and monitored for years, gathering important information on desert lions. National Geographic would come to Namibia and film the desert-adapted lions in their stunning surroundings.
There is a Desert Lion project, and it states that these lions are positive features of the country that need to be fiercely protected.
