Learn Bushmen’s Survival Skills

In the highlands of Tanzania live the Hadzabe Bushmen, masters of survival skills. Living in this area requires many refined skills, be it hunting with handmade bows and arrows or treating snake and scorpion bites. The Hadzabe have adapted perfectly to this wild and beautiful habitat and if you are willing to learn from them, you might be in for a life changing experience. Doing a Tanzania Safari will give you sight into the different cultural and how they live and survive in Tanzania

The village is situated on the shores of Lake Eyasi, beneath the southern Ngorongoro Highlands. The Hadzabe are hunter-gatherers, who survive efficiently on what nature has to offer. They craft their bows and arrows from the wood of the sandpaper tree, sometimes using natural poisons to hunt larger prey such as kudu. An intimate knowledge of the area’s plant life allows them not only to distinguish edible fruit, but to produce poisons as well as treatments for malaria and scorpion or snake bites.

An Introduction to African Survival

As a visitor to the Hadzabe people you will not only see the Bushmen apply their survival skills, but get a hands-on practical introduction. How much you can learn will depend on the duration of you stay. However this experience is so different from city life, it will be well worth taking a few days to soak up the feeling of being in harmony with nature and becoming independent of modern technical devices.

There is no schedule or itinerary when visiting the Hadzabe village. Your experience will mainly depend on what is needed and available. However if you are particularly keen on a certain activity let your guide know and he will do his best to arrange it. You activities at Lake Eyasi may include:

  • Learning how to shoot a handmade bow and arrow
  • Making a fire using stick friction
  • Learn treatments for Malaria and snake and scorpion bites
  • Ambushing and hunting prey
  • An introduction to the indigenous plant life
