Walking Safaris in South Luangwa
Do you want to experience African wildlife? Stare a lion right in the eye? Feel the ground shake as a herd of elephants walks by? There is only one way to experience this kind of African adventure – a walking safari. There are only a few places a walking safari can be done and the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia is one of them.
Step Out Of the Vehicle, Please!
When you are diving into the African animal kingdom you don’t want to create a big splash. You want to see the animals in an undisturbed environment and witness their natural behaviour. The only way to blend in is to adapt the most basic and natural means of transport – walking. Chasing animals in huge 4×4 vehicles obviously interferes with their natural behaviour. If you want to get some understanding of African wildlife, you will have to experience it on foot. Stepping out of the vehicle removes the last barrier between the vibrant animal kingdom and yourself. You will not just be watching one of the most fascinating environments on this planet, you will become part of it. Without boarders or interferences you smell the plants, find bird feathers, inspect animal dung and tracks and sooner or later come face to face with some of the most majestic animals that walk this earth. South Luangwa host the full array of African Wildlife: leopard, lion, hippo, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and several species of antelope. Standing face to face with a lion or an elephant is a completely different experience without fences or car windows to shield you. Just try to imagine it and it gets your adrenaline pumping!
Are Walking Safaris Safe?
Walking safaris are safe. Every safari on foot in South Luangwa National Park is accompanied by a qualified and knowledgeable guide and an armed ranger. However due to the skill and experience of the guide it is highly unlikely that the rifle will be used. The idea is to blend into the environment, giving you the experience of completely blending in with the African wildlife. Your guide will share amazing insights into the interactions of the fauna and flora of South Luangwa. Walking safaris take 3-4 hours and are conducted on level ground, so they don’t require great levels of fitness. You won’t be able to run away from the wildlife either ways.
