Hiking Trails
The Naukluft area offer some beautiful, but challenging hiking trails. Beware especially aware of the heat. It actually gets so hot that some trail can’t be done in summer. Always carry enough water and don’t hike alone. If you do take the reasonable precautions you will discover biblical views.
Naukluft Hiking Trail
This 8 day loop through the Naukluft Mountains offers some serious hiking. The chain assisted ascents, scrambles over boulders and a lack of the comforts are off-putting to some. However good preparation is everything and if a little adventure in the wild is what you’re looking for this is a great option.
Be prepared for extreme temperatures. Always have enough water for the hot days and something to keen you warm when the temperatures drop considerably at night. You can drop supplies at Tufa Shelter which is about half way though the 120km trail. No open fires are permitted and due to the hot summer temperatures hikes only run from March to Octobert. The hike needs to be booked in advance and only groups of 3- 12 people are allowed.
Waterkloof Trail
This 17km hike gives you the best this area has to offer, awesome views, rock pools and good chances of spotting some oryx or zebra. It will take about 8 hours to complete. It can be done all year, but consider the heat and carry enough water.
Olive Trail
This is the shortest hike in the area. With some steep ascends this 10km walk still gives you a nice challenge before you get to the plateau and let your gaze wander across that endless open space. The hike will take about 5 hours and can also be done all year round.
Naukluft 4×4 Trail
This is of the toughest non-guided 4×4 trails you’ll find anywhere. Test your driving skills on the 73km overnight trail. There is accommodation with showers, a fireplace and toilets. Only one group of up to 16 people and 4 vehicles is allowed at the time.
