Fish River Canyon Hike

IMG 2112 Fish River Canyon

Surely one of the most impressive landscapes in the world, the Fish River Canyon is only second to the Grand Canyon in size and the Fish River Canyon hike is second to none… in adventure. At 160 km in length and up to 27 km in width the Canyon is truly majestic. The canyon formed in two stages. 650 million years ago tectonic movement cracked the earth. Over the years the river cut further into the rock, leaving one of Namibia’s most impressive features.

Ai-Ais Hot Springs

The hot springs of Ai-Ais (Nama for ‘piping hot’) are located on the south end of the Fish River Canyon. The sulphurous water reaches temperatures of up to 60°C and is reputedly good for rheumatism.

The springs are a popular holiday destination for locals and international visitors. It is also got good starting point for Fish River canyon hikes.

Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail

The 5-day hike through the 550m deep canyon is an overwhelmingly beautiful experience. The 85km camping trip is fairly challenging, but one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. The hike takes you from the hiker’s view point in Hobas to the the hot springs of Ai-Ais.

The route is open from May to September. Check for water availability before you depart and make sure that you have sufficient supplies on you since it can get very hot. You will have to book in advance with Namibia Wildlife Resorts as well as organize your own accommodation and transport. The Fish River canyon hiking trail is one not too be missed by any tourists who is a hiking enthusiast.
