Swakopmund – Extreme Sports Capital
Formerly a beach resort for Namibian tourists exchanging the heat of Central Namibia for mild coastal climate, great fishing, German delicacies and the odd pint of Namibian brew, Swakopmund is developing in to a backpackers Mekka and attracts adrenaline junkies from around the globe. Challenge yourself to riding a quad bike in the Namib dunes, speeding down a hughe pile of sand at 60kmh on just a piece of carboard, test your skill at sand boarding or jump out of a plane to combine your adrenaline rush with a bird’s-eye-view of the stunning black and orange patterns of the coastal desert.
Swakopmund also offers a wide range of desert animals and marine life for those who want to take it a bit slower. Swakopmund has a fair amount of German colonial architecture, a few museums and the world’s largest crystal cluster.
Only 30km south of Swakopmund lies Wavlis Bay, Namibia’s only harbour. It has some interesting bird life, fun water sports and restaurants overlooking the harbour.
