Things to do around Windhoek
Daan Viljoen Game Park
If you are a keen hiker or birder the Daan Viljooen Game Reserve is where you want to go. Situated just 18km west of Windhoek in the Khomes Highlands this park doesn’t have any dangerous predators, which allows you to go exploring on foot. You’ll see any amount of kudu, zebra, springbok, eland and the like on eye level.
The 200 bird species will make the hiking ornithologist dizzy with excitement. Get a bird list in the park’s office before you head into the highland savannah.
There are three hiking trails. The 9km Rooibos trail takes up on the mountains giving you some great views while the shorter Wag-’n-Bietjie Trail takes you along a dry riverbed with great animal viewing. If you are serious about your hiking pre-book the two-day Sweet-Thorn Trail.
Arnhem Cave
Did you know Batman has Namibian relatives? They live just 130km outside of Windhoek in Namibia’s longest cave. Arnhem Cave takes you for a 4.5km underground hike. It is home to six different species of bats. Experience the thrill of getting a glimpse of blue sky after being cut off from daylight most of the tour.
The tour through dolomite and limestone is quite dusty so bring some old clothes. Helmets and headlight can be hired from the tour-guide.
