Eating Out
There is a nice variety of restaurants in Windhoek. You’ll still find a fair amount of German cuisine along with other popular options such as Thai, Italian or Indian and of course African delicacies. However if you are a vegetarian Windhoek is not your favourite culinary destination.
If you are looking for German cuisine you have to try Gathemann’s. This slightly posh restaurant scores with it’s prime location overlooking Independence Avenue as well as first grade German and local meat dishes. Less formal and immensely popular with visitors is Joe’s Beer House. This atmospheric spot gives you two things Namibia is famous for, large meat dishes and beer. Treat yourself to it!
A craving for seafood will take you to Luigi and the Fish. This reasonably priced venue serves steak, pasta and vegetarian dishes as well. If you are warming up for a night-out come here for a few drinks in a friendly environment. For African cuisine try La Marmite, where you’ll get to savour dishes from Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Namibia and many more.
If you are feeling less adventurous or you are travelling on a budget the usual fast food franchises are all available. Check out King Pie if you want to chow like the locals.
Drink and Dance
Central Windhoek at night is…sleepy. Maybe its due to the large meat dishes for supper, but there really isn’t much going on here. If if you are in need of a fun night out try the Club Thriller in Katutura. The club is located in a township, but it is relatively secure and dancing to African beats with the local crowd will definitely give you something to write home about.
The Funky Lab in Klein Windhoek can get quite busy over the weekends. Another popular venue is La Dee Da’s in the southern industrial area offering hip hop, rave, rock, pop and African tunes.
